Studying can be a gruesome task and believe me I absolutely understand

But,

Do you really have a choice when midterms or finals are around the corner?

 Well, not really

The good thing is when you think you don’t have the time to do the numerous amount of workload on your plate, there is a time management system that works effectively. This system will help you plan your schedule in a way that you still have time to engage in other activities that matter to you

In this post, I will walk you through how you can create a study schedule and manage time efficiently while going through all your modules, texts and revisions for your final exam or test

If you prefer to watch instead, I have included a video with the same information. just scroll down to watch it. Thank you

Before we deep dive, there are some factors you need to take into consideration while creating your personalized schedule. These are really important because they differ for everyone and they determine how much time and energy you need to dedicate into each tasks

And they are;

Current Standing

Make a list of all your courses and honestly assess your current standing in each one of them. Check to see  what courses that you may be having knowledge gaps and this will determine how much time on your schedule you need to allocate to that particular course

You can use your current grades to determine what comes easy for you and what classes can be a little bit of a challenge

This is really important because if there is a course that is a bit challenging, you may want to block out some time to meet up with study groups or perhaps your professor and teaching assistant

Weight of the final exam

Ask yourself, is it really worth it to block out 5hrs everyday to study for a course that carries a weight of 10% of your final grade when you have other courses that carry a minimum of 30% of your final grade

If you need to visit your syllabus again, to see what the graded weight percentage is for the course, I highly suggest that you do. So you don’t spend so much time on a course that just isn’t worth the stress

Lets face it, whether you are doing so well or so bad in that course, 10% in your final exam won’t make that much of a difference

How much time you have left

This will help you in determining how much availability you have to dedicate to each of your courses.

For example, if you have 1 month till your final exam, it will be easier for you to space out your workload over a span of 4 weeks to reduce overwhelm, but if you have 1 week till you have final exam, you may have to make certain compromises if you already have prior commitments just so you can dedicate that hour to studying for your exam

Course resources

How much course resources you have at your disposal will also determine how much time you need to put into your schedule.  There will be some courses where you may have well written extensive notes, past questions, revision booklets or at least it’s easy to find one if you need it. Those kinds of courses, what you need to do is just sit down and study.

But there are other, that you most likely will have to go through the entire large textbook again to make notes, find study groups, photocopy notes because you either didn’t go to class or the professor just didn’t have much to offer on the slides

Whatever the case may be, you obviously need to allocate time to making that extra effort to get decent notes that you can use to study for that course

Kind of professor/TA

You have probably spent some time with your professor and perhaps handed in some assignments so you know what kind of professor you have and their expectations. Some professors are easy graders and some have high expectations. Professors with high expectations, it doesn’t matter how easy or straightforward the question is, they need you to go above and beyond with your answer. So while you are practicing some answers and making notes, you may want to give yourself that extra 10-15 mins just to do a little more research for that particular question if it comes out during your exam

Exam Format

Multiple choice exams don’t tend to need as much time to study, especially if you have past questions that you are using as your guide. But if you have long research essays on your exam, you may need more time to research, construct an introduction, theseis, conclusion. If you have both multiple choice, and long answer questions then you may want to dedicate more hours to studying for that particular exam

Time of productivity

This will determine your start time when you are planning your study schedule. If you are more productive in the morning then you will want to plan your study schedule for mornings but if you are a night owl, then your dedicated study time will be at night.

Whatever time of day that you are best productive at, is when you should schedule your study sessions

Now,this will only work best if you make a conscious effort to stick with your study schedule. It may not be easy, but it will definitely be worth it

Creating a study schedule

To create a study schedule, we would be using calendars to block out time for all our activities. I use google calendars because I find that works best for me, it is easily accessible and syncs with all my devices. It is free to use, all you need to do is have a gmail account or create a gmail account

While I will be using google calendars, you can use any calendar that works best for you. If you have an iphone, ipad or macbook, you can also use the calendar that comes with Apple products. It is all the same idea.

  1. Create a calendar for all your activities

When you start out using google calendar, there is just one default calendar but it is more efficient if you create multiple calendars for all your activities and colour code them as you please

Here’s how to do it;

Make a list of all aspects of your life, create a calendar and colour code them

Example; Work,Study,Blog,Family,Personal,Appointments, extracurricular,party,exam day etc

Note: it’s easier to use a computer or laptop to create your scheduling, using an ipad or iphone may slow you down and they have reduced functionality

  1. On the left side, under my calendars, you should see other calendars then click the (+) sign,
  2. select create new calendar
  3. Give it a name for example, Study
  4. You don’t really need a description but ensure you are on the correct time zone

2) Scheduling

This is where you plan your entire day and you block out a dedicated amount of time for your studying.

Now depending on your productive time of day and prior commitment the start and end time will differ for everyone.

You also want to take into consideration all the factors we listed above, to help personalize your schedule to fit your needs

First, you want to start scheduling all your exam day, prior commitments and routines into your calendar. That way, you will see what hours you have left and can commit to studying

  • Click on the block with the date and time
  • Name your title with the tasks you need to complete
  • add it to the appropriate category in the drop down

3) Share your calendars

Some people benefit from having study buddies or accountability partners. Your accountability partner can be anyone, not just your study buddy. It could be family, partners, friends, strangers, you just need someone to keep you in check and ensure you are following your commitments and hold you to task when you don’t.

You can share your calendar with them, so they know what you should be doing at the time.

And if it is your study buddy, you both know when it is time to meet up to study

Here’s how to share it
  • Click on the event you created
  • Add location for your study session if you have one
  • In the description field, input any necessary information or obligations for your study partners
  • set a notification to notify all parties involved beforehand
  • in the guest tab, type the email of your study partners
  • Then save it
